Quick Overview |
Organic IRON Dietary Supplement |
 |
Extra iron
supplementation is often recommended during
pregnancy, in anemic conditions, and when iron
deficiencies produce a lack of energy. Most iron
supplements are made from inorganic materials which
may produce other health concerns. Iron obtained
from natural foodstuff is the optimal way to
supplement a diet. Organic Iron is easily absorbed
without any digestive disturbance. |

|
 |
An Iron Supplement without Digestive Disturbances |
Iron is an essential dietary mineral with an adult
recommended daily allowance of 18 mg. per day. The iron in
ORGANIC IRON is extracted from organic curry leaves
Murraya koenigii. In Ayurvedic medicine they are considered
an herbal tonic, stimulating the stomach to enhance
digestion and used to treat various digestive disorders. In
western medicine, iron is often prescribed for anemia, extra
nutritional support during pregnancy, and when a lack of
energy is diagnosed as iron deficiency. |
 |
Digestion, assimilation and absorption of iron supplements |
The body digests and assimilates plant materials far better
than inorganic matter mined from the earth’s crust. The iron
present in most dietary supplements is a chemical
preparation from iron ore which is mined from rocks. This
iron is not well metabolized by the body and can produce
undesirable side effects; the most common are
gastrointestinal irregularities and cardiovascular diseases
when there is a high level of inorganic iron in the blood. |
 |
Symptoms of Iron Deficiency |
|
Symptoms of iron deficiency include a lack of energy,
shortness of breaths, headache, irritability, and dizziness.
Those at the most risk of low iron levels include:
|
•
|
Women who are
menstruating, especially if they have heavy periods |
• |
Women who are pregnant or
who have just had a baby |
• |
Long-distance runners |
• |
Strict vegetarians |
• |
People with any type of
bleeding in the intestines (for example, a bleeding
ulcer) |
• |
People who frequently
donate blood |
• |
People with
gastrointestinal conditions that make it hard to absorb
nutrients from food* |
|
 |
Iron is most often prescribed by doctors in anemic
conditions and for pregnant and lactating women. Babies and
young children are at risk for low iron levels if they do
not receive the appropriate foods. Babies moving to solid
foods should eat iron-rich foods. Infants are born with
enough iron to last about six months. An infant's additional
iron needs are met by breast milk. Infants that are not
breastfed should be given an iron supplement or
iron-fortified infant formula. |

Contraindications, Interactions and
Side-Effects for Organic Iron |
Since Organic Iron from Medicinal Nutraceutics is
100% from plants, side effects are less likely
when compared with standard inorganic iron found
in most dietary supplements. However, it is
important that you are aware of the most common
ones.
In children, death has occurred from ingesting 200
mg of iron. It is important to keep iron
supplements tightly capped and away from
children's reach. Any time excessive iron intake
is suspected, immediately call your physician or
Poison Control Center, or visit your local
emergency room. Doses of iron prescribed for iron
deficiency anemia in adults are associated with
constipation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea,
especially when the supplements are taken on an
empty stomach.
The genetic disorder called hemochromatosis
affects the body's ability to control how much
iron is absorbed. This leads to too much iron in
the body. Treatment consists of a low-iron diet,
no iron supplements, and phlebotomy (blood
removal) on a regular basis.
In 2001, the Institute of Medicine of the National
Academy of Sciences set a tolerable upper intake
level (UL) for iron for healthy people. There may
be times when a physician prescribes an intake
higher than the upper limit, such as when
individuals with iron deficiency anemia need
higher doses to replenish their iron stores. The
table below lists the ULs for healthy adults,
children, and infants 7 to 12 months of age. |
